While the iPad was originally designed as a touch-first device, modern versions of iPadOS have transformed it into a genuine laptop replacement. One of the most significant productivity upgrades you can make is pairing your iPad with a Bluetooth mouse. Whether you are editing a complex spreadsheet, writing a long document, or precisely selecting text, a physical mouse dramatically improves your accuracy and speed.
Apple has built excellent cursor support directly into the operating system. Instead of a traditional arrow, the iPad cursor appears as a subtle, translucent circle that intelligently adapts to different buttons and text fields on the screen.
In this guide, we will show you how to pair any standard Bluetooth mouse with your iPad and how to customise its settings for a perfect desktop-like experience.
Step 1: Put Your Mouse in Pairing Mode
Before your iPad can discover your mouse, the mouse must be actively broadcasting its Bluetooth signal. The method for this varies slightly depending on the brand of mouse you own (such as Logitech, Microsoft, or Apple’s own Magic Mouse).
- Turn the mouse on using the physical power switch (usually located on the bottom).
- Look for a small Bluetooth pairing button (often marked with the Bluetooth logo or a double-arrow symbol). Press and hold this button for 3 to 5 seconds.
- The LED light on the mouse should begin flashing rapidly, indicating that it is in pairing mode and ready to be discovered.
Step 2: Connect the Mouse to Your iPad
Once your mouse is flashing, you can connect it via the iPad’s settings menu.
- Open the Settings app on your iPad.
- Tap on Bluetooth in the left-hand sidebar.
- Ensure the Bluetooth toggle switch at the top of the screen is turned On (green).
- Look under the Other Devices section at the bottom of the list. You should see the name of your mouse appear (e.g., “Logitech MX Master” or “Magic Mouse”).
- Tap the name of your mouse.
- A pop-up may appear asking for a pairing request. Tap Pair.
Your mouse is now connected! You will immediately see the circular cursor appear on your iPad screen when you move the mouse.
Step 3: Customise Your Mouse Settings
To get the most out of your new setup, you should adjust the tracking speed and button configurations to match your personal preferences. iPadOS offers a dedicated menu for this.
- Open the Settings app.
- Tap on General in the left-hand sidebar.
- Tap on Trackpad & Mouse (this option only appears when a mouse is actively connected).
From this menu, you can configure several important features:
- Tracking Speed: Adjust the slider to make the cursor move faster or slower across the screen.
- Natural Scrolling: By default, scrolling down on your mouse wheel pushes the page up (similar to swiping a touchscreen). If this feels backwards to you, turn this toggle off to revert to traditional PC scrolling.
- Secondary Click: Choose which side of the mouse acts as your “right-click.” Right-clicking on an iPad brings up incredibly useful contextual menus, just like a Mac or Windows PC.
How to Customise the Cursor Appearance
If you find the default circular cursor difficult to see, Apple allows you to change its size, colour, and behaviour through the Accessibility settings.
- Go to Settings > Accessibility.
- Tap on Pointer Control.
Here, you can change the Pointer Size, add a colourful border using the Colour menu, or adjust the Scrolling Speed independently of the tracking speed. You can also turn off Pointer Animations if you do not want the cursor to automatically snap to buttons on the screen.
By connecting a Bluetooth mouse and a keyboard, you can unlock the full potential of your iPad, transforming it from a simple consumption tablet into a powerful, portable workstation.
