How to Factory Reset an iPad

Whether you are selling your iPad, sending it in for repair, or trying to fix a persistent software bug that standard troubleshooting cannot solve, a factory reset is the ultimate solution. A factory reset completely wipes the device, deleting all photos, apps, messages, and settings, returning the iPad to the state it was in when you first took it out of the box.

Before You Begin: Back Up Your Data

Because a factory reset permanently deletes everything, you must back up your data first.

  1. Connect your iPad to Wi-Fi.
  2. Open Settings, tap your name at the top of the left sidebar, and select iCloud.
  3. Tap iCloud Backup and then tap Back Up Now. Wait for the process to finish.

Method 1: Reset via Settings (If You Can Unlock the iPad)

If your iPad is working normally and you know your passcode, this is the easiest method.

  1. Open the Settings app.
  2. Tap on General in the left sidebar.
  3. Scroll to the very bottom of the General menu and tap Transfer or Reset iPad.
  4. At the bottom of the screen, tap Erase All Content and Settings.
  5. Tap Continue. You will be asked to enter your iPad passcode.
  6. Your iPad will attempt to back up to iCloud one last time. If you already backed up, you can tap Skip Backup.
  7. You will be prompted to enter your Apple ID password to turn off Activation Lock and “Find My iPad.” Enter it and tap Turn Off.
  8. Finally, tap Erase iPad. The screen will go black, the Apple logo will appear with a progress bar, and the device will wipe itself clean.

Method 2: Reset Using a Computer (If You Forgot the Passcode)

If your iPad is disabled because you entered the wrong passcode too many times, you cannot use the Settings app. You must force it into Recovery Mode using a computer.

  1. Plug your iPad into a Mac or a Windows PC (using iTunes or the Apple Devices app).
  2. For iPads without a Home button: Press and quickly release the Volume button closest to the top button. Press and quickly release the other Volume button. Press and hold the Top power button until the Recovery Mode screen appears (a picture of a cable pointing to a computer).
  3. For iPads with a Home button: Press and hold both the Home button and the Top power button at the same time until you see the Recovery Mode screen.
  4. On your computer, a pop-up window will say there is a problem with the iPad. Click Restore. The computer will download the necessary software and wipe the iPad clean.
