While Apple Safari offers stellar battery efficiency, iCloud Keychain integration, and fluid scrolling on iPadOS, many users rely on cross-platform browsers such as Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Microsoft Edge, or Brave on their desktop workstations. When tapping hyperlinks inside emails, Slack messages, Microsoft Teams chats, or notes on your iPad, iPadOS defaults to opening Safari unless you explicitly designate an alternative default browser.
Modern versions of iPadOS permit users to switch their system-wide default web browser, ensuring all external URLs launch immediately in your preferred browsing environment with full access to your synced bookmarks, history, and passwords.
Requirements for Setting a Third-Party Browser as Default
Before modifying your system settings, verify that your desired browser is installed from the App Store and updated to a version supporting iPadOS default browser entitlement (such as Google Chrome, Firefox, Microsoft Edge, DuckDuckGo, or Brave).
Changing Your Default Browser in iPad Settings
Follow these steps to configure your chosen browser:
- Open the Settings app on your iPad.
- In the left-hand navigation column, scroll down to the alphabetical list of installed applications.
- Locate and tap the third-party browser you wish to make your default (for example, tap Chrome, Firefox, or Edge).
- On the right-hand configuration panel, locate the option labelled Default Browser App.
- Tap Default Browser App.
- Tap your preferred browser to place a blue tick next to its name.
iPadOS immediately commits your choice. From this point forward, tapping any web hyperlink across all installed applications will route directly into your chosen browser.
Reverting Back to Safari
If you later decide to return to Apple Safari to take advantage of native tab groups or Apple Intelligence reading tools, return to Settings > Safari (or Settings > your third-party browser), tap Default Browser App, and select Safari.
Troubleshooting Missing “Default Browser App” Setting
If the Default Browser App setting does not appear in your app’s configuration sheet, launch the third-party browser once from your home screen and grant initial permissions. If it still does not display, confirm your iPad is running iPadOS 14 or later under Settings > General > About.
