Whether you are studying in a bustling cafe, working in an open-plan office, or trying to unwind before sleeping, intrusive environmental sounds can shatter concentration. While many users install third-party ambient sound applications or stream looping soundscapes through streaming services, Apple integrates a dedicated, system-level audio feature directly into iPadOS called Background Sounds. Designed as an accessibility and cognitive focus tool, Background Sounds plays continuous ambient audio in the background—masking ambient chatter and noise while blending seamlessly with audiobooks, podcasts, and video playback.
Available Native Ambient Soundscapes
Apple includes six meticulously designed, looping ambient audio profiles directly in iPadOS that do not consume streaming data once cached:
- Balanced Noise: A gentle blend of higher and lower frequencies (similar to pink noise) that softens sudden environmental clatter.
- Bright Noise: Higher-frequency white noise that effectively masks conversational speech and high-pitched office sounds.
- Dark Noise: Deeper, lower-frequency noise (brownian noise) with a warm, rumble-like tone that provides a soothing acoustic blanket.
- Ocean: Rhythmic, natural waves rolling gently onto shorelines to induce calm during deep reading or meditation.
- Rain: Continuous, steady rainfall against a roof or ground, ideal for sustained focus sessions.
- Stream: The organic trickle and gurgle of flowing water through a natural forest brook.
Step 1: Enable Background Sounds via iPad Settings
To configure and activate Background Sounds for the first time:
- Open the Settings app on your iPad.
- Scroll down and select Accessibility from the left-hand sidebar.
- Under the Hearing section, tap on Audio & Visual.
- Tap on Background Sounds.
- Toggle the switch next to Background Sounds to the On position.
Your iPad will begin playing the default sound immediately through your built-in speakers or connected AirPods/headphones.
Step 2: Choose and Customise Your Soundscape
From the Background Sounds configuration menu:
- Tap on Sound to open the soundscape library.
- Select your preferred profile (e.g., Rain, Ocean, or Dark Noise). If you are selecting a sound for the first time, iPadOS will briefly display a small download cloud icon as it fetches the high-definition audio file to local storage.
- Use the Volume slider to set the baseline decibel level.
Step 3: Configure Media Blending and Auto-Stop Options
One of the greatest benefits of native Background Sounds compared to third-party audio apps is its intelligent system integration:
- Use When Media is Playing: Ensure this toggle is On if you want rain or white noise to continue softly in the background while watching YouTube, attending a Zoom lecture, or listening to lo-fi music.
- Volume With Media: Adjust this secondary slider to decide how loud the ambient noise should remain when other audio plays. For example, you can set ambient rain to drop to 20% volume while spoken podcasts play, preventing dialogue interference.
- Stop Sounds When Locked: If you use Background Sounds exclusively while actively working on your iPad, toggle this switch on. If you use ambient noise to fall asleep, leave it Off so the soundscape continues indefinitely after the screen turns off.
Step 4: Add Quick Hearing Controls to Control Centre
Navigating through the full Settings app every time you want to toggle ambient noise is unnecessary. You can trigger Background Sounds in two taps via Control Centre:
- Go to Settings > Control Centre.
- Scroll down to More Controls and tap the green + (Plus) icon next to Hearing.
- Now, swipe down from the top-right corner of your iPad screen to open Control Centre.
- Tap the Hearing (Ear icon) button.
- Tap the Background Sounds tile at the bottom to toggle ambient noise on or off instantly, or tap the sound name to swap between Rain, Ocean, and Noise without leaving your active app.
Step 5: Create an Accessibility Shortcut for Triple-Click Activation
For ultimate physical convenience, assign Background Sounds to your iPad’s physical buttons:
- Navigate to Settings > Accessibility > Accessibility Shortcut (at the very bottom).
- Select Background Sounds.
- Now, triple-click your iPad’s Top power button (or Home button on supported models) to instantly mute or unmute your ambient soundscape.
Troubleshooting Background Sounds on iPad
- No Audio Output: Check if your iPad is connected to an idle Bluetooth speaker or headphones in another room. Verify that the physical volume rocker is turned up and that the volume slider in the Background Sounds menu is not set to zero.
- Sounds Pause During Phone Calls: By design, iPadOS mutes background ambient noise during incoming FaceTime or cellular calls to ensure optimal voice intelligibility. The sound automatically resumes once the call ends.
- Storage Management: The six high-fidelity audio loops occupy minimal storage (under 150 MB total). If you ever need to clear cached audio assets, toggling the feature off allows iPadOS to purge temporary sound caches if device storage reaches critical thresholds.
