How to Change the Default Web Browser on an iPhone

Breaking Free from Apple Safari

For the first 13 years of the iPhone’s existence, Apple forced every single user to rely on Safari. Even if you downloaded Google Chrome from the App Store and used it as your primary browser, the operating system would stubbornly ignore your preference. Anytime you clicked a web link inside a text message, an email, or a social media app, your iPhone would always launch Safari.

Fortunately, following intense regulatory pressure, Apple finally unlocked this restriction starting with iOS 14. You now have complete freedom to choose which app handles your web links.

If you prefer the seamless Google ecosystem integration of Chrome, the aggressive privacy blocking of Brave, the customisation of Microsoft Edge, or the speed of Mozilla Firefox, you can permanently set any of them as your default browser in just a few seconds.

How to Change the Default Browser on an iPhone

Before you begin, ensure you have actually downloaded your preferred alternative browser from the App Store. The iPhone cannot set an app as the default until it is fully installed on the device.

  1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone (the grey gear icon).
  2. Scroll down on the main Settings screen. You will need to scroll past the general system settings, past the passwords section, until you reach the massive alphabetical list of every third-party app installed on your phone.
  3. Find your preferred browser in this list (for example, scroll down to the “C” section and tap on Chrome, or the “F” section and tap Firefox).
  4. Tap the name of the browser.
  5. Look for a setting labeled Default Browser App. (If this setting is missing, the browser you selected does not support being a default, or you need to update your iPhone to a newer iOS version).
  6. Tap Default Browser App.
  7. A list will appear showing Safari alongside any other compatible browsers you have installed. Tap your preferred browser to move the blue checkmark next to it.

That is it. You do not need to click save or restart your phone. The change is immediate.

To test that it worked, open the Messages app or the Mail app and tap on any web link. Instead of opening Safari, your iPhone should immediately launch your newly selected browser and load the webpage.

What Happens to Safari?

Changing your default browser does not delete Safari from your iPhone. Safari is a core part of the iOS operating system and cannot be uninstalled. It will remain on your home screen or in your App Library.

However, Safari will effectively become dormant. It will only open if you manually tap the Safari icon yourself. All automatic link handling will be routed exclusively to your new default choice.

Why Did My Default Browser Switch Back?

If you successfully changed your default browser to Google Chrome, but a few weeks later your iPhone starts opening links in Safari again, you have likely encountered an annoying iOS quirk.

If you ever delete your default browser from your phone (even temporarily to free up space), iOS will instantly panic because it no longer has a default web handler. To prevent the phone from breaking, iOS automatically reverts the default setting back to Safari.

If you reinstall Chrome from the App Store later, iOS will not switch the default back automatically. You must repeat the steps above to manually re-select Chrome as the default browser every time you uninstall and reinstall the app.
