Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) is the most critical security setting you can enable to protect your online accounts. Traditionally, 2FA requires you to type in a six-digit code sent via a text message (SMS). However, security experts now widely consider SMS to be insecure due to “SIM swapping” attacks, where hackers trick mobile carriers into transferring your phone number to their device to intercept your codes.
The secure alternative is using an Authenticator app (like Google Authenticator or Authy) to generate time-based codes locally on your device. What many iPhone users do not realize is that Apple quietly built a highly secure, auto-filling Authenticator directly into the core of iOS, completely eliminating the need for third-party security apps.
Why Use the Built-In iOS Authenticator?
Using Apple’s native password manager and authenticator offers three massive advantages over third-party apps:
- Auto-Fill: When you log into a website using Safari or a supported app, iOS will automatically fill in your password and automatically fill in the 2FA code instantly. You never have to frantically switch back and forth between apps trying to memorize a six-digit number before the timer runs out.
- Cloud Syncing: Your 2FA codes are securely synced across iCloud. If you buy a new iPhone, or if you log in on your Mac or iPad, the codes are automatically there, ready to use. (Losing a phone with Google Authenticator installed often means permanently losing access to your accounts).
- Security: The codes are locked behind Face ID or Touch ID, ensuring no one can access them even if your phone is left unlocked on a desk.
How to Set Up 2FA for an Account (e.g., Twitter, GitHub, Amazon)
To use the built-in authenticator, you must first have the website generate a setup code.
- Log into the website or app you want to secure (for example, Amazon).
- Navigate to the Security or Account Settings menu and locate the Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) section.
- Choose the option to set up an Authenticator App (do not choose SMS or text message).
- The website will display a large, square QR code on your computer screen. (If you are doing this entirely on your iPhone, look for a tiny link below the QR code that says “Enter setup key manually” and copy the long string of text provided).
How to Add the Code to Your iPhone
Now you must link that QR code to your Apple Passwords vault.
- Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
- Scroll down and tap on Passwords. Authenticate using Face ID or your passcode.
- Search for and tap on the specific account you are securing (e.g., tap on your saved Amazon password entry).
- If you have not saved the password in your iPhone yet, tap the ‘+’ icon in the top right corner to create a new entry for the website first.
- Under the “Account Options” section, tap Set Up Verification Code.
- A menu will pop up with two options:
- Scan QR Code: If the QR code is displayed on your computer screen, select this. The iPhone camera will open. Point it at the QR code.
- Enter Setup Key: If you are doing this entirely on your phone, select this and paste the long text string you copied earlier.
The moment you scan the code or enter the key, your iPhone is linked. You will immediately see a six-digit number generating and refreshing every 30 seconds directly underneath your saved password in the Settings menu.
Completing the Setup
The website (Amazon) is still waiting to verify that you successfully linked your device.
- Look at the six-digit code currently displaying in your iPhone Settings.
- Type that exact six-digit code into the verification box on the website.
- Click Verify or Confirm.
The setup is complete. The next time you log into that website using Safari on your iPhone or Mac, Apple will scan your face, fill in your password, and automatically drop the correct six-digit 2FA code into the box without you lifting a finger.
How to Access the Codes Manually
If you are trying to log into a website on a Windows PC or a device that isn’t logged into your Apple ID, the auto-fill feature won’t work. You can manually retrieve the code at any time:
- Open your iPhone Settings > Passwords.
- Tap the account.
- You will see the live, ticking six-digit code. Tap it to copy it, or simply read it off the screen and type it into your PC.
