Robocalls, telemarketers, and spam callers have turned the simple act of answering a ringing phone into a stressful gamble. If you are tired of your iPhone constantly interrupting your day with calls from phone numbers you do not recognize, Apple has provided a powerful, nuclear option: you can force the iPhone to automatically silence all unknown callers.
How the “Silence Unknown Callers” Feature Works
When this feature is active, it fundamentally changes how your iPhone handles incoming calls.
- If a call comes from a number saved in your Contacts app, your phone rings normally.
- If a call comes from a number you recently called, or a number from an email signature your iPhone recognizes, it rings normally.
- If a call comes from a completely random, unknown number, your iPhone will not ring, vibrate, or light up.
Instead, the unknown call is instantly sent directly to your voicemail. The caller can still leave a message, and the missed call will appear silently in the “Recents” tab of your Phone app, allowing you to review it on your own time.
How to Enable Silence Unknown Callers
Activating this feature takes only a few seconds.
- Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
- Scroll down the list and tap on Phone.
- Scroll down to the “Call Silencing and Blocked Contacts” section and tap Silence Unknown Callers.
- Toggle the switch to the On (green) position.
Important Warnings Before Using This Feature
While this feature is incredible for peace of mind, it is a blunt instrument. It does not intelligently determine if a call is spam; it simply blocks anything not in your contacts. Therefore, you must be careful when using it.
You may miss important, legitimate phone calls if you are not prepared:
- Medical Professionals: If your doctor’s office, dentist, or pharmacy calls from a secondary line that is not saved in your phone, the call will be silenced.
- Deliveries: Food delivery drivers (like UberEats or DoorDash) or package couriers trying to find your address will be sent straight to voicemail.
- Job Interviews: If you are expecting a call from a recruiter, turn this feature off immediately.
How to Manage Important Numbers
To use this feature safely, you must become diligent about maintaining your Contacts app. If a plumber is coming to your house tomorrow, ask them what phone number they will be calling from, and add it to your contacts immediately.
If you realize you missed a legitimate call in your Recents list, simply tap the “i” icon next to the unknown number and select “Create New Contact.” The next time they call, your phone will ring loudly and proudly.
