How to Turn Off “Offload Unused Apps” on iPhone

The Disappearing App Mystery

If you are frequently running out of storage space on your iPhone, iOS has a feature called “Offload Unused Apps” that operates in the background. When your phone drops below a critical storage threshold, the operating system aggressively scans your app library. If it finds a heavy 3GB game or a travel application that you haven’t opened in several months, it will silently delete the core application files from your phone, leaving only the app icon on your home screen (marked with a tiny cloud symbol). While this keeps your phone from crashing, it is incredibly frustrating to tap an app you urgently need (like an airline boarding pass app) while standing in an area with no Wi-Fi, only to discover the phone deleted it without asking. If you prefer to manage your storage manually, you must disable this automated purging.

How to Turn Off “Offload Unused Apps”

You can disable the background storage management from the main App Store settings.

  1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
  2. Scroll down the main list until you find App Store. Tap it.
  3. Scroll all the way down to the bottom of the App Store settings page.
  4. Locate the toggle switch labeled Offload Unused Apps.
  5. Tap the switch to turn it Off (the green background will disappear).

Manual Storage Management

Once disabled, iOS will never delete an application without your explicit permission, regardless of how little storage space you have left. If your phone fills up completely, you will receive a storage warning, and you will have to manually navigate to Settings > General > iPhone Storage to manually review and delete large videos or applications yourself. This guarantees that every app icon on your home screen is fully installed, fully updated, and ready to launch even when you are entirely offline.
