Trying to find a friend at a massive outdoor music festival, or trying to explain exactly where you parked your car in a sprawling city, can be an incredibly frustrating experience. Instead of texting confusing directions like “I’m near the big tree past the food trucks,” you can use your iPhone to share your exact, real-time GPS location directly to their phone. They will see you as a moving dot on a map, allowing them to walk straight to you.
How to Share Your Location in Messages
The fastest and easiest way to share your location is directly through the built-in Messages app, provided you are texting someone who also owns an Apple device (iPhone, iPad, or Mac).
- Open the Messages app on your iPhone.
- Tap on the text message conversation with the friend or family member you want to meet.
- At the very top of the screen, tap on their Name or profile picture.
- A small menu will drop down. Tap on Share My Location.
Choosing a Time Limit
Privacy is incredibly important when sharing your GPS coordinates. When you tap the button, your iPhone will immediately ask you how long you want this tracking session to last. You will be presented with three options:
- Share for One Hour: This is the perfect option for meeting up at a restaurant or a concert. Your friend can see your location on a map for 60 minutes, and then the tracking automatically expires and turns off. You do not have to remember to revoke their access.
- Share Until End of Day: Ideal for road trips, conferences, or long days out at a theme park. The tracking will automatically disable itself at midnight.
- Share Indefinitely: This option never expires. It is generally only recommended for close family members, spouses, or children, allowing you to check on each other’s safety at any time using the Find My app.
Once you make your selection, a small map widget will appear directly in your text message conversation. Your friend can tap that map to open it in full screen and get turn-by-turn walking directions directly to your exact coordinates. If you ever need to cancel the tracking early, just tap their name at the top of the chat again and select Stop Sharing My Location.
