How to Recover Deleted Text Messages on an iPhone Without a Backup

Accidentally deleting an important text message on your iPhone can induce immediate panic, especially if you do not have a recent iCloud or iTunes backup to restore from. In the past, deleting a message thread was a permanent action unless you resorted to expensive third-party data recovery software. Fortunately, starting with iOS 16, Apple introduced a built-in safety net that allows you to recover deleted messages directly on your device, without needing a backup.

Understanding the ‘Recently Deleted’ Feature

Similar to the Photos app, the Messages app now features a “Recently Deleted” folder. When you delete a message or an entire conversation, it is not immediately erased from your iPhone’s storage. Instead, it is moved to this hidden folder, where it remains for up to 30 days. After this grace period expires, the messages are permanently deleted by the system and can no longer be recovered without a previous backup.

How to Recover Deleted Messages

If you deleted the message within the last 30 days and your iPhone is running iOS 16 or a newer operating system, follow these steps to retrieve it:

  1. Open the Messages app on your iPhone.
  2. Look at the top left corner of the main Messages screen. Depending on whether you have “Filter Unknown Senders” enabled in your settings, you will see either an Edit button or a Filters button.
    • If you see Edit, tap it, then select Show Recently Deleted from the drop-down menu.
    • If you see Filters, tap it to view your message folders, then select Recently Deleted from the list.
  3. You are now viewing the Recently Deleted folder. This screen displays a list of all deleted conversations, along with the number of days remaining before permanent deletion. Note that you cannot view the contents of the messages from this screen; you can only see the sender’s contact name or number.
  4. Tap the circle next to the conversation(s) you wish to restore to select them.
  5. Tap Recover in the bottom right corner of the screen.
  6. A confirmation pop-up will appear. Tap Recover [Number] Messages to confirm.

The selected conversations will immediately be moved out of the Recently Deleted folder and restored to their original chronological position in your main message list.

Limitations and Considerations

This method is highly effective, but it has strict limitations. Firstly, it only applies to messages deleted after you updated your device to iOS 16; it cannot retroactively recover messages deleted on older operating systems. Secondly, if you manually delete a conversation from the “Recently Deleted” folder before the 30-day timer expires, it is gone forever. Finally, if more than 30 days have passed since the initial deletion, your only remaining option is to erase your iPhone and restore it from a backup created prior to the deletion.
