The default Calculator app on the iPhone is famously simple, featuring just a number pad and the four basic arithmetic operators (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division). Because of this minimalist design, millions of high school students and engineers mistakenly believe they need to download a third-party application to perform complex trigonometry or logarithmic calculations.
In reality, Apple built a fully featured, 30-button scientific calculator directly into the operating system. They simply hid it behind a physical gesture.
How to Reveal the Scientific Calculator
The key to unlocking the advanced calculator is your iPhone’s internal gyroscope.
- Open the standard Calculator app on your iPhone.
- Before proceeding, ensure that Portrait Orientation Lock is turned off. (Swipe down from the top-right corner of your screen to open the Control Center, and ensure the icon featuring a padlock surrounded by a circular arrow is grey, not red).
- Hold your iPhone normally in your hand, and simply rotate the physical device 90 degrees to a horizontal (landscape) position.
The moment the screen rotates, the interface will dramatically expand. The basic number pad will shift to the right side of the screen, while dozens of advanced mathematical functions will instantly populate the left side.
Available Mathematical Functions
The built-in scientific calculator provides almost every function found on a dedicated physical TI-84 device, including:
- Trigonometry: Sine (sin), Cosine (cos), and Tangent (tan), along with their inverse functions. You can also toggle a button in the bottom-left corner to switch between calculating in Degrees (Deg) or Radians (Rad).
- Logarithms: Natural log (ln) and base-10 logarithms (log10).
- Exponents and Roots: Square roots, cube roots, squaring, and raising x to the power of y.
- Constants: Dedicated buttons for Pi (π) and Euler’s number (e).
- Memory: Keys to save (m+), subtract (m-), and recall (mr) specific calculations.
To return to the standard calculator, simply rotate your phone back to a vertical position.
