QR (Quick Response) codes are ubiquitous. From restaurant menus to Wi-Fi network credentials and concert tickets, you interact with these black-and-white squares daily. While the standard method for scanning a QR code on iOS is to unlock your phone, find the Camera app, point it at the code, and tap the small yellow notification bubble that appears, there is a much faster method built directly into iOS.
Apple includes a dedicated, highly optimized QR Code Scanner tool that you can launch instantly from your iPhone’s Control Center. Unlike the standard Camera app, this dedicated tool opens instantly without loading complex camera interface elements, and it is specifically tuned to recognize codes faster and in lower light conditions.
How to Add the Scanner to the Control Center
Before you can use the shortcut, you must add it to your Control Center layout.
- Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
- Scroll down and tap on Control Center.
- Scroll down to the “More Controls” section (these are the tools not currently active in your menu).
- Locate the tool named Code Scanner.
- Tap the green + (plus) icon next to Code Scanner to move it up into your “Included Controls” list.
You can use the three horizontal lines on the right side of the list to drag the scanner to a more prominent position if desired.
Using the Dedicated Code Scanner
- Swipe down from the top-right corner of your screen to open the Control Center (or swipe up from the bottom if you are using an iPhone with a physical Home button).
- Tap the new Code Scanner icon (it looks like a QR code inside a viewfinder frame).
A specialized viewfinder will open. Unlike the standard Camera app which waits for you to tap a notification bubble, this dedicated tool will instantly parse the code and immediately execute the action—whether that means opening a Safari webpage, adding a contact card, or joining a Wi-Fi network. It requires zero extra taps.
If you are in a dimly lit restaurant attempting to scan a menu, you will also notice a prominent Flashlight icon at the bottom of the scanner screen, allowing you to illuminate the code with a single tap.
