If you are conducting deep research for a university project, attempting to read a foreign news publication, or trying to purchase train tickets directly from a European vendor, you will inevitably stumble upon a website written entirely in a language you cannot read. In the past, you had to manually highlight the text, copy it, open a new tab, navigate to a translation website, and paste the text just to understand a single paragraph. Today, Google Chrome features a highly intelligent, built-in translation engine that can convert entire web pages into English instantly, preserving the original formatting and images.
How to Enable Google Translate in Chrome
The translation engine is built directly into the browser, but you may need to ensure it is actively monitoring the websites you visit.
- Open the Google Chrome browser on your computer.
- Click the three vertical dots (the menu button) located in the extreme top right corner of the window.
- Select Settings from the drop-down menu.
- In the left-hand sidebar, click on Languages.
- Scroll down to the Google Translate section. Ensure the toggle switch for “Use Google Translate” is turned ON.
How to Translate a Webpage
Once the feature is active, Chrome will automatically detect when you visit a foreign website.
- Navigate to a website written in a foreign language (e.g., a French news site).
- A small Google Translate pop-up dialog box will automatically appear near your address bar (or a small translate icon will appear inside the address bar itself).
- Click on English (or your preferred native language). The entire webpage will instantly rewrite itself in English.
Automating the Process
If you frequently visit websites in a specific language, you can force Chrome to translate them automatically without ever asking you.
- Click the small translate icon in the address bar.
- Click the three vertical dots inside the pop-up menu.
- Select Always translate [Language] (e.g., Always translate French).
From now on, whenever you click a link to a French website, Chrome will seamlessly translate the page in the background before you even begin reading.
