If you own multiple Apple devices—such as an iPhone, an iPad, and perhaps a work iPhone—all logged into the same Apple ID, you may have experienced a frustrating phenomenon. You download a new game or utility app on your iPad, and suddenly, that exact same app automatically downloads and installs itself on your iPhone’s home screen. This feature is called “Automatic Downloads,” and while it aims to keep your devices perfectly synced, it often results in cluttered home screens and wasted storage space on devices where you don’t actually need the app. You can easily stop your iPhone from mirroring your other devices’ downloads.
How to Disable Automatic App Downloads
You can turn off this syncing behaviour directly from your iPhone’s App Store settings.
- Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
- Scroll down the main settings menu until you find App Store (it is usually located in the group with other default apps like Passwords, Mail, and Safari).
- Tap on App Store.
- Look at the very top section titled “Automatic Downloads.”
- You will see a toggle switch labelled App Downloads.
- Tap the switch to move it to the Off position (the green background will turn to grey).
Note: You should repeat this exact process on your iPad if you also want to stop it from automatically downloading apps that you purchase on your iPhone.
What About Updates?
Directly beneath the “App Downloads” toggle is another switch for “App Updates.” Leaving this switch turned On is generally recommended. It ensures that the apps you do choose to install on your iPhone remain up-to-date with the latest security patches, without randomly installing new apps from your other devices.
