By default, Mozilla Firefox employs a strict pop-up blocker that aggressively prevents websites from opening new, smaller windows without your explicit permission. While this is fantastic for stopping intrusive advertisements and spam, it can sometimes break legitimate websites. For example, some banking portals, university login systems, and corporate web applications rely on pop-up windows to display secure forms or downloadable receipts. If you are frequently using a trusted site that is failing to function properly because Firefox is blocking its scripts, you can completely turn off the global pop-up blocker.
How to Turn Off the Pop-up Blocker
You can disable this feature in the main Privacy & Security menu.
- Open the Mozilla Firefox browser.
- Click the Application Menu button (the three horizontal lines) in the top-right corner.
- Select Settings from the drop-down list.
- In the left-hand sidebar menu, click on Privacy & Security.
- Scroll down the page until you find the Permissions section.
- Locate the checkbox labelled Block pop-up windows.
- Click the checkbox to uncheck it.
Firefox will immediately allow all websites to open pop-up windows freely. If you only want to allow pop-ups for one specific website (like your bank), you should leave the “Block pop-up windows” box checked, and instead click the Exceptions… button next to it. You can type your bank’s exact URL into this list, maintaining your protection on the rest of the web while allowing your required site to function.
