How to Completely Disable ‘Wi-Fi Assist’ System-Wide on an iPhone

Wi-Fi Assist is a feature enabled by default on modern iPhones that automatically supplements a poor Wi-Fi connection with your cellular data. For example, if you are walking away from your house and your Wi-Fi signal drops to one bar, Wi-Fi Assist will silently kick in and use your LTE/5G network to ensure your webpage loads quickly. While highly convenient for maintaining a seamless internet connection, it is a notoriously deceptive feature that can consume gigabytes of cellular data without your knowledge. If you are on a strict, metered data plan, Wi-Fi Assist can easily push you over your monthly limit, resulting in expensive overage charges.

This guide explains how to completely disable the Wi-Fi Assist feature system-wide on an iPhone to guarantee that your cellular data is never used without your explicit knowledge.

Disable Wi-Fi Assist via Cellular Settings

Because this feature bridges both the Wi-Fi and Cellular radios, the control mechanism is located at the very bottom of your cellular data routing table.

  1. Unlock your iPhone and open the main Settings app.
  2. Tap on Cellular (in some regions, this is labelled Mobile Data).
  3. You will now see a list of every app installed on your phone and its individual data usage. Scroll down to the absolute bottom of this very long list. You must scroll past every single application.
  4. At the bottom, just above the “iCloud Drive” toggle, you will find Wi-Fi Assist.
  5. The menu will also display exactly how much data Wi-Fi Assist has secretly consumed during the current billing period.
  6. Tap the toggle switch next to Wi-Fi Assist to move it to the Off (grey) position.

Verify the Strict Network Separation

Disabling this toggle forces the baseband processor to maintain a strict separation between network interfaces; it will never bridge them automatically.

To verify the restriction is active, connect to a Wi-Fi network and move to the absolute edge of its range (where you only have a single, weak Wi-Fi bar). Attempt to load a heavy webpage or a high-resolution video. The iPhone will stubbornly attempt to pull the data exclusively through the struggling Wi-Fi connection, resulting in slow loading or buffering. It will not silently fall back to your 5G connection. You now have absolute, manual control over when your cellular data bucket is utilized.
