Apple Wallet makes contactless payments incredibly seamless via Apple Pay. By default, iOS allows you to rapidly access your default credit card and transit passes simply by double-clicking the side button, even when the iPhone is completely locked. While highly convenient at the checkout counter, this feature can expose the existence of your financial institutions to bystanders or thieves who steal your locked device. Although they cannot complete a transaction without Face ID or your passcode, they can still view the last four digits of your cards, your recent transit history, and your stored loyalty passes.
This guide explains how to completely disable Apple Wallet (Apple Pay) access from the lock screen on an iPhone, ensuring maximum privacy for your financial data.
Disable Wallet Access via Face ID & Passcode Settings
To secure your Wallet, you must revoke its permission to display over the lock screen. This setting is managed within the core authentication menu of iOS.
- Unlock your iPhone and open the main Settings app.
- Scroll down and tap on Face ID & Passcode (or “Touch ID & Passcode” on older devices).
- You will be prompted to enter your device’s 6-digit numeric passcode. Enter it to proceed.
- Scroll down to the section titled Allow Access When Locked. This list dictates which features bypass the lock screen.
- Locate the toggle switch next to Wallet.
- Tap the switch to toggle it to the Off (grey) position.
Verify the Lockdown
The security policy is applied immediately upon toggling the switch.
To verify the restriction is active, lock your iPhone by pressing the side power button once. While the screen is black or showing the lock screen (and facing away from you so Face ID does not trigger), double-click the side power button rapidly.
Instead of the Apple Wallet interface sliding up to reveal your credit cards, the phone will simply do nothing, or it may wake the screen to prompt for a passcode.
