Bluetooth is a ubiquitous wireless protocol used for connecting everything from AirPods to smartwatches. However, leaving the Bluetooth radio constantly broadcasting when you are not actively using paired accessories is a drain on your iPhone’s battery and a potential privacy risk, as retailers can use Bluetooth beacons to track your movement through a store. Many users believe they are turning off Bluetooth by tapping the blue icon in the iOS Control Center, but this only temporarily disconnects current accessories; the radio remains active in the background for Apple services like AirDrop and Handoff.

Disable Bluetooth via the Settings App
To achieve a true hardware shutdown of the Bluetooth antenna, you must bypass the Control Center “soft disconnect” and use the main Settings application.
- Unlock your iPhone and open the main Settings app from the Home Screen.
- Near the top of the list, immediately below Wi-Fi, tap on Bluetooth.
- You will see a master toggle switch at the top of the screen labelled Bluetooth. If the radio is currently active, it will be green.
- Tap the switch to toggle it to the Off (grey) position.
Verify the Hardware Shutdown
Flipping this switch in the Settings app commands the iOS kernel to completely power down the Bluetooth transceiver.
To verify the true shutdown, swipe down from the top-right corner of your screen to open the Control Center. Look at the Bluetooth icon located in the network connections platter (the square containing Airplane Mode and Wi-Fi).
When you use the “soft disconnect” method, the icon turns white or grey but remains selectable.
