Android’s “Developer Options” menu is a hidden treasure trove of advanced settings, offering tools for USB debugging, animation scaling, background process limits, and OEM unlocking. While these features are essential for app developers and power users looking to root or deeply customise their devices, they can be dangerous in the wrong hands. Accidentally tweaking the wrong setting in this menu can cause severe performance issues, break USB connectivity, or compromise your device’s security. If you have previously enabled this hidden menu and no longer need it, turning it off is highly recommended.
This guide explains how to completely disable and re-hide the Developer Options menu on your Android smartphone or tablet.
Disable Developer Options via the Settings Menu
The standard way to disable the menu is by toggling it off from within the menu itself. This method works on almost all modern Android versions (Android 9 through Android 14), though the exact wording may vary slightly depending on your manufacturer (Samsung, Google Pixel, OnePlus, etc.).
- Open the main Settings app on your Android device.
- Scroll all the way down to the bottom of the list and tap on System (on some devices, like Samsung Galaxy phones, Developer Options will be listed directly at the bottom of the main Settings menu).
- Locate and tap on Developer options.
- At the very top of the screen, you will see a master toggle switch, usually labelled Use developer options or simply On.
- Tap the toggle switch to turn it to the Off position.
Once toggled off, all the advanced settings below it will immediately grey out. If you press the back button to return to the System (or main Settings) menu, you will notice that the “Developer options” entry has completely disappeared.
Clear the Settings App Data (Alternative Method)
If you encounter a bug where the master toggle switch does not exist, or the menu refuses to hide itself after being turned off, you can force it to reset by clearing the data of the Settings app.
- Open the main Settings app.
- Navigate to Apps > See all apps (or “App management”).
- Scroll down and find the Settings app in the list, then tap on it.
- Tap on Storage & cache (or “Storage usage”).
- Tap the Clear storage or Clear data button. (Do not worry, this will not delete your personal files or accounts; it simply resets your Settings app preferences to default).
After clearing the data, the Settings app will forcefully close. When you reopen it, the Developer Options menu will be permanently gone, and your device will revert to its secure, standard configuration.
