How to Fix iPhone Battery Drain on iOS 17

Every time Apple releases a major software update, a wave of users inevitably complains that their battery life has plummeted. If you recently updated to iOS 17 and find yourself reaching for the charger by noon, you are not alone.

While some battery drain in the first 48 hours is normal (your iPhone is busy indexing files and updating databases in the background), persistent drain requires action. Here is how to fix iPhone battery drain on iOS 17 and get your device lasting all day again.

1. Identify Rogue Background Apps

Before you change any system settings, you need to find out if a specific app is malfunctioning and silently chewing through your battery.

  1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
  2. Scroll down and tap on Battery.
  3. Wait a moment for the battery usage graphs to populate. Scroll down to the list of apps.
  4. Tap the blue text that says Show Activity (or tap on the list itself). This will show you exactly how many minutes an app was used on-screen versus in the background.

If you see a social media app or a game that you barely opened today consuming 30% of your battery in the background, you have found your culprit. Go to the App Store and ensure the app is fully updated to its iOS 17-compatible version.

2. Restrict Background App Refresh

Many apps constantly ping the internet to download new content even when you are not using them. Turning this off is the fastest way to save power.

  1. Go to Settings > General.
  2. Tap on Background App Refresh.
  3. You have two choices here: You can either go down the list and manually turn off the switches for individual apps (highly recommended for social media apps), or you can tap the top menu and turn it off entirely.

Turning this off will not stop you from receiving push notifications; it just means a news app will not load its articles until the exact moment you open it.

3. Tame Your Location Services

Using the GPS antenna is incredibly power-intensive. Many apps request your location constantly when they only really need it once.

  1. Go to Settings > Privacy & Security.
  2. Tap Location Services.
  3. Review the list of apps. If you see a shopping app or a mobile game set to “Always,” tap it and change it to While Using the App or Never.

The only apps that genuinely need “Always” access are weather widgets or fitness trackers that log your outdoor runs.

4. The Nuclear Option: Reset Network Settings

If you have tried everything above and your phone is still running unusually hot and draining fast, there may be a corrupted network configuration file causing the cellular radio to work overtime trying to maintain a signal.

  1. Go to Settings > General.
  2. Scroll to the very bottom and tap Transfer or Reset iPhone.
  3. Tap Reset, then choose Reset Network Settings.

Warning: This will not delete your photos or apps, but it will erase all your saved Wi-Fi passwords and Bluetooth connections, so you will have to log back into your home router. However, it is often the most effective cure for mysterious iOS 17 battery drain.
