How to Hide the Menu Bar Automatically on a Mac

The Interface Intrusion Vector

The macOS Menu Bar—the thin strip spanning the absolute top of the screen housing the Apple Logo, application menus, and the system clock—is a foundational element of the operating system. However, if you are editing a video, writing code, or working on a small 13-inch MacBook screen, that permanent strip consumes valuable vertical pixels. For users seeking absolute immersion and maximum screen real estate, the Menu Bar is an unnecessary visual anchor.

How to Hide the Menu Bar Automatically

You can instruct the operating system to dynamically slide the Menu Bar up and off the screen, identical to the behavior of a hidden Dock.

1. Click the Apple Logo in the top-left corner of the screen.
2. Select System Settings from the dropdown menu.
3. In the left-hand sidebar, scroll down and click on Control Centre (Note: In older versions of macOS, this setting was located in the “Desktop & Dock” or “General” menus).
4. Scroll down the main pane until you locate the section specifically dedicated to the Menu Bar Only.
5. Look for the dropdown menu labelled Automatically hide and show the menu bar.
6. Click the dropdown menu and select Always.

The Menu Bar will immediately slide upwards and vanish, granting your active application the absolute maximum amount of vertical space. To access the menus, simply shove your mouse cursor aggressively to the absolute top edge of the display, and the bar will instantly slide back down into view.
