The Internal Motor
The iPhone uses an advanced “Taptic Engine” to produce physical vibrations. By default, iOS uses this motor constantly—when you receive a text message, when an emergency alert triggers, when you type on the keyboard, and even when you simply scroll past certain UI elements. While you can individually turn off keyboard haptics or text vibrations in the Sound settings, hunting down every single vibration trigger is incredibly tedious. If you suffer from sensory processing issues or simply demand that your phone act as a perfectly still pane of glass, you must kill power to the internal motor at the operating system level.
How to Turn Off All Vibrations Globally
You can completely lock out the Taptic Engine via a master override switch in the Accessibility settings.
- Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
- Scroll down and tap on Accessibility.
- Under the “Physical and Motor” section, tap on Touch.
- Scroll down to the exact middle of the screen and locate the toggle switch labeled Vibration.
- Toggle this switch to the Off position (the green background will disappear).
A Perfectly Still Device
The change is absolute and instantaneous. The iPhone will physically cut all power to the Taptic Engine. The warning text below the switch confirms: “When this is off, all vibration on your iPhone will be disabled, including those for earthquake, tsunami, and other emergency alerts.” Your phone will never again buzz, tap, or vibrate under any circumstance, ensuring a completely physically inert device experience.
