How to Disable Emergency Alerts Globally on iPhone

The Violent Interruption

By default, iOS is connected to national and local emergency alert systems. These systems are used to broadcast severe weather warnings, AMBER alerts for missing children, and extreme threat notifications. When an alert is issued for your physical location, the iPhone violently interrupts whatever you are doing, blasts a terrifying, full-volume siren—even if your phone is set to silent—and locks the screen with the alert text. While these are designed for public safety, the system is often abused by local agencies for minor issues, causing massive disruptions during sleep or highly focused work. If you demand absolute silence, you must completely disable these government alerts.

How to Turn Off Emergency Alerts Globally

You can permanently disconnect the iPhone from the emergency broadcasting system via the Notifications settings.

  1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
  2. Scroll down and tap on Notifications.
  3. Scroll all the way down to the absolute bottom of the app list to the “Government Alerts” section.
  4. Depending on your country, you will see a series of toggle switches (e.g., AMBER Alerts, Emergency Alerts, Public Safety Alerts).
  5. Toggle every single switch in this section to the Off position (the green backgrounds will disappear).

Absolute Silence

The change takes effect instantly. The iPhone will completely sever its internal connection to the cellular emergency broadcast frequencies. The next time a severe weather warning or an AMBER alert is issued for your area, your phone will remain completely silent and visually inert. You will never again be violently jolted awake by the government siren, ensuring a perfectly peaceful, uninterrupted device experience.
