How to Disable the “True Tone” Display Feature on iPhone

The Shifting Color Palette

Modern iPhones feature a hardware sensor that constantly analyzes the ambient light in your physical environment. A software feature called “True Tone” uses this sensor data to automatically shift the color temperature of your screen. If you are standing under warm, yellow incandescent light bulbs, True Tone turns your screen extremely yellow to match. If you are under harsh fluorescent office lights, it turns the screen stark blue. If you edit photos, color-correct videos, or simply prefer absolute color accuracy rather than a shifting, yellowish tint, you must disable this ambient tracking feature.

How to Turn Off True Tone

You can permanently lock your screen to a pure, hardware-accurate color profile via the Display settings.

  1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
  2. Scroll down and tap on Display & Brightness.
  3. Under the “Brightness” slider, locate the toggle switch labeled True Tone.
  4. Toggle this switch to the Off position (the green background will disappear).
  5. Alternatively, open the Control Center by swiping down from the top right corner, long-press the vertical Brightness slider, and tap the True Tone button at the bottom right so it turns grey.

Absolute Color Accuracy

The change takes effect instantly. The iPhone will completely sever the connection between the ambient light sensor and the display’s color rendering engine. Your screen will immediately snap back to a pure, stark white balance. It will absolutely never again attempt to guess the lighting conditions of your room, guaranteeing that a white photo looks exactly the same in your bedroom as it does outdoors in direct sunlight.
