The Blank Screen
Windows 11 is designed to be highly energy efficient, especially on laptops. By default, if you do not touch the mouse or keyboard for a few minutes, Windows assumes you have stepped away and will automatically turn off the display. While this saves battery life and prevents screen burn-in on OLED panels, it is incredibly frustrating in certain scenarios. If you are reading a long article, carefully referencing a complex chart on your screen while typing on a separate device, or simply watching a background process complete, having the screen suddenly go black forces you to constantly jiggle the mouse just to keep the computer awake.
Keeping the Lights On
To ensure your screen remains continuously visible during long reading sessions and to stop Windows 11 from automatically turning off the display, you must adjust the specific screen timeout settings in the power menu.
Press the Windows Key, type Settings, and hit Enter. In the left-hand navigation pane, select System. On the right side, click on Power & battery (or just Power if you are on a desktop PC). Look for the section labelled Screen and sleep and click it to expand the options. You will see dropdown menus for how long the system waits before turning off the screen (often separated into “On battery power” and “When plugged in”). Click the dropdown menus associated with turning off the screen and scroll to the very bottom of the list. Select Never. Your display will now remain permanently on as long as the computer is running, regardless of how long it sits idle.
