How to Disable the Apple Pay Double-Click Shortcut on iPhone

The Accidental Wallet

By default, iOS maps a highly sensitive hardware shortcut to the iPhone’s Side Button (the power button). If you physically double-click this button rapidly, the operating system instantly overrides whatever you are doing, opens the Wallet app, and primes your default credit card for an Apple Pay transaction using Face ID. While convenient at a cash register, this shortcut is constantly triggered by accident when picking the phone up off a table, attempting to lock the screen, or trying to adjust the volume. If you prefer to manually open the Wallet app only when you are actually purchasing something, you must disable this hardware macro.

How to Turn Off the Double-Click Shortcut

You can permanently unbind the Side Button from the Apple Pay engine via the Wallet settings.

  1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
  2. Scroll down the main list and tap on Wallet & Apple Pay.
  3. Under the “Cards” section, locate the toggle switch labeled Double-Click Side Button.
  4. Toggle this switch to the Off position (the green background will disappear).

A Dedicated Power Button

The change takes effect instantly. The iPhone will completely sever the hard-coded link between the physical power button and the payment daemon. You can now rapidly double-click or mash the Side Button, and the operating system will simply turn the screen on and off. Your credit cards will remain securely locked inside the Wallet app, ensuring the payment interface never again interrupts your workflow or gaming session by accident.
