The Intrusive Widget Board
In modern versions of watchOS, Apple introduced the “Smart Stack,” a series of widgets that appear when you scroll the Digital Crown. By default, the operating system attempts to be “proactive.” If it detects an active Live Activity on your iPhone (like a running Uber timer, an active sports score, or a playing podcast), it will violently hijack your watch screen, automatically launching the Smart Stack over the top of your standard watch face the moment you raise your wrist. If you prefer your watch to strictly display the time until you manually intervene, you must disable this automatic UI takeover.
How to Turn Off Smart Stack Auto-Launch
You can permanently lock the Smart Stack behind manual scrolling via the Display settings.
- Open the Settings app directly on your Apple Watch (the grey gear icon).
- Scroll down the main list and tap on Display & Brightness.
- Scroll down past the Wake settings to the section labeled “Smart Stack.”
- Locate the master toggle switch labeled Auto-Launch Live Activities.
- Toggle this switch to the Off position (the green background will disappear).
Preserving the Watch Face
The change is instantaneous. The Apple Watch will completely sever the software trigger that forces the widget board to the foreground. The next time you order an Uber or start a timer, your watch face will remain completely undisturbed when you raise your wrist. The Smart Stack will still exist, and the Live Activity will still run in the background, but you are now strictly required to manually rotate the Digital Crown to view it, guaranteeing your chosen watch face remains the absolute priority.
