How to Disable Auto-Correction on iPhone

The Aggressive Editor

The iPhone keyboard features a highly aggressive Auto-Correction engine. By default, as you type a message, the iOS dictionary constantly analyzes your spelling. If it detects a misspelled word, it will automatically and silently replace it with what it considers the correct spelling the moment you hit the spacebar. While this is incredibly helpful for standard writing, it is completely infuriating if you frequently type in slang, use complex technical acronyms, or mix multiple languages in the same sentence. If the iPhone keeps changing your correct words into incorrect guesses, you must turn off the automatic replacement engine.

How to Turn Off Auto-Correction

You can force the keyboard to stop altering your text via the General settings.

  1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
  2. Scroll down and tap on General.
  3. Scroll down and tap on Keyboard.
  4. Under the “All Keyboards” section, locate the toggle switch labeled Auto-Correction.
  5. Toggle this switch to the Off position (the green background will disappear).

Absolute Control

The change takes effect instantly. The iPhone will completely sever the automatic replacement engine from the keyboard. When you type a word—no matter how badly it is misspelled or how obscure the slang is—and hit the spacebar, the exact letters you typed will remain on the screen. The phone will still underline misspelled words in red, allowing you to manually correct them if you choose, but it will never again alter your text without your explicit permission.
