The Accidental Reply
When you receive a text message on your Apple Watch, scrolling to the very bottom of the notification reveals a massive list of “Smart Replies.” These are AI-generated, one-tap responses like “Sounds good!”, “Yes”, or “I’m on my way.” While designed for convenience, the massive buttons take up significant screen space. Even worse, if you accidentally brush your finger against the screen or accidentally tap your watch against your leg while the screen is awake, you can instantly fire off an irrelevant, context-free text message to your boss or family member without any confirmation prompt. You must disable the automatic reply engine.
How to Turn Off Smart Replies
You must sever the AI’s ability to generate text responses using the companion Watch app on your iPhone.
- Open the Watch app on your iPhone.
- Ensure you are on the My Watch tab at the bottom left.
- Scroll down the main list and tap on Messages.
- Tap on Default Replies.
- At the very top of the screen, locate the master toggle switch labeled Smart Replies.
- Toggle this switch to the Off position (the green background will disappear).
A Clean Notification
The change is instantaneous. The Apple Watch will completely terminate the background AI algorithm responsible for reading your incoming texts and generating responses. The massive list of pre-written buttons will instantly vanish from the bottom of your message notifications. You will no longer accidentally fire off unwanted replies, forcing you to intentionally use the keyboard or voice dictation when you actually want to respond.
