How to Disable “Share Focus Status” on iPhone

The Privacy Leak

When you turn on “Do Not Disturb” or a custom Focus mode on your iPhone to silence incoming alerts, Apple attempts to be helpful by automatically broadcasting your status to your contacts. By default, if a friend opens the Messages app to text you, a small banner will appear at the bottom of their screen stating, “John has notifications silenced.” While this prevents them from getting angry if you don’t reply immediately, it is a massive invasion of privacy. If you are ignoring a specific person, or if you simply don’t want anyone knowing exactly when you sleep or work, you must disable this broadcast.

How to Turn Off Focus Status Sharing

You can revoke the operating system’s permission to broadcast your status via the Focus settings.

  1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
  2. Scroll down and tap on Focus.
  3. Scroll down to the bottom of the main Focus menu and tap on Focus Status.
  4. Look for the master toggle switch labeled Share Focus Status.
  5. Toggle this switch to the Off position (the green background will disappear).

Silent Isolation

The change is instantaneous. The iPhone will immediately stop broadcasting your status to the iMessage network. From now on, when you activate Do Not Disturb, you will vanish silently. Your contacts will simply see a standard text box; they will have absolutely no idea whether your phone is actively ringing in your pocket or if you have them completely silenced.
