How to Disable Safari’s ‘Hide IP Address’ Feature to Fix Broken Websites on iOS

Why Do Some Websites Break in Safari?

Apple places a strong emphasis on user privacy, and Safari on iOS includes several built-in tracking prevention features. One of these features is “Hide IP Address,” which prevents known trackers from identifying your location and profiling your browsing habits based on your IP address. While excellent for privacy, this feature routes your traffic through Apple’s servers to mask your origin. Occasionally, this routing process can interfere with websites that require a direct connection, rely on IP-based localization, or employ strict anti-bot security measures. If you find that a specific website refuses to load, gets stuck in a captcha loop, or displays formatting errors in Safari on your iPhone or iPad, disabling this feature temporarily can often fix the problem.

How to Disable “Hide IP Address” for All Websites

If you are experiencing widespread issues across multiple websites, you can disable the feature globally in your iOS Settings. This will stop Safari from masking your IP address from known trackers.

  1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone or iPad.
  2. Scroll down and tap on Safari.
  3. Scroll down to the “Privacy & Security” section.
  4. Tap on Hide IP Address.
  5. By default, this is likely set to “From Trackers”. Tap Off to disable the feature entirely.

Return to Safari and refresh the broken webpage. In many cases, establishing a direct, unmasked connection will allow the site to load normally.

How to Disable iCloud Private Relay (If Applicable)

If you are an iCloud+ subscriber, you may have a more comprehensive version of this feature enabled called iCloud Private Relay. Private Relay masks your IP address from all websites, not just known trackers, which increases the likelihood of website compatibility issues.

If turning off the Safari-specific setting did not fix your issue, you may need to disable Private Relay.

  1. Open the Settings app.
  2. Tap on your Apple ID name/profile at the very top of the screen.
  3. Tap on iCloud.
  4. Under the “iCloud+” section, tap on Private Relay.
  5. Toggle the switch to the Off position.
  6. You will be prompted to confirm; choose Turn Off Until Tomorrow or Turn Off Private Relay completely.

Security Considerations

Disabling these features means that websites and advertising networks can once again see your real IP address, which can be used to estimate your general location and track your activity across the web. It is generally recommended to leave “Hide IP Address” enabled under normal circumstances and only disable it temporarily as a troubleshooting step when a necessary website refuses to function.
