How to Disable Nightstand Mode on Apple Watch

The Bedside Glow

The Apple Watch features a charging mechanic known as “Nightstand Mode.” By default, when you connect the watch to its magnetic charger and lay it on its side, the screen transforms into a bright green, horizontal digital clock. Furthermore, the display is highly sensitive to microscopic vibrations; lightly bumping your nightstand or shifting in bed will instantly illuminate the screen, flooding a dark bedroom with bright light. For users who charge their watch overnight and require absolute darkness to sleep, this feature is incredibly disruptive. You must permanently disable it.

How to Turn Off Nightstand Mode

You can permanently paralyze the horizontal charging interface via the General settings.

  1. Open the Settings app directly on your Apple Watch (the grey gear icon).
  2. Scroll down the main list and tap on General.
  3. Tap on Nightstand Mode.
  4. Locate the master toggle switch labeled Nightstand Mode.
  5. Toggle this switch to the Off position (the green background will disappear).

Absolute Darkness

The change is instantaneous. The Apple Watch will completely sever the internal bridge connecting the charging circuit and the gyroscope to the display controller. You can now plug the watch into the magnetic puck and lay it on its side, and the operating system will absolutely refuse to spawn the green digital clock. The screen will remain pitch black while charging, and bumping the nightstand will no longer trigger the display, guaranteeing an entirely dark and uninterrupted sleeping environment.
