How to Upload Files and Folders to Google Drive

Google Drive provides an excellent way to backup your important documents and access them from any device in the world. Whether you need to save a single PDF file or back up an entire folder of family photos, uploading items to Google Drive is a simple and straightforward process.

Method 1: Drag and Drop (The Easiest Way)

If you are using a desktop computer (PC or Mac) and a modern web browser like Google Chrome, Firefox, or Safari, the fastest method is simply dragging your files directly into the browser window.

  • Open your web browser and navigate to drive.google.com.
  • Open your computer’s file explorer (File Explorer on Windows or Finder on Mac) and locate the files or folders you wish to upload.
  • Click and hold the item, drag it over to the Google Drive window, and release your mouse button when you see the blue “Drop files to instantly upload them” overlay.

Method 2: Using the ‘New’ Button

If dragging and dropping is inconvenient, you can use the built-in upload menus.

  • In Google Drive, click the large + New button located in the top-left corner of the screen.
  • Select either File upload or Folder upload from the dropdown menu, depending on what you want to save.
  • A window will pop up showing your computer’s files. Select the items you want and click Open or Upload.

Method 3: Uploading on the Mobile App

Uploading files from your smartphone or tablet is just as easy.

  • Open the Google Drive app on your iPhone, iPad, or Android device.
  • Tap the large floating + (Plus) button in the bottom right corner.
  • Tap Upload.
  • Browse through your phone’s storage or photo gallery, tap the files you want to upload, and wait for the progress bar to finish.
