The Always-Listening Assistant
By default, iOS keeps the iPhone’s microphone continuously active in a low-power state, waiting to hear the specific trigger phrase “Hey Siri” (or simply “Siri” in newer updates). While convenient for hands-free timers or smart home controls, it introduces significant privacy concerns and accidental triggers. If a television commercial or a podcast host says a word that sounds similar to the trigger phrase, your phone will instantly interrupt what you are doing and begin recording audio to send to Apple’s servers. To guarantee that your phone only listens to you when you physically command it to, you must disable the passive voice trigger.
How to Turn Off the Hey Siri Voice Trigger
You can permanently sever the microphone’s background listening state via the Siri settings.
- Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
- Scroll down and tap on Siri & Search (or Apple Intelligence & Siri on newer models).
- At the very top of the menu, locate the option labeled Listen for.
- Tap on Listen for and select the Off option from the list.
Physical Invocation Only
The change takes effect instantly. The iPhone will completely terminate the background audio processing daemon responsible for monitoring ambient room noise. You can now confidently leave your phone on your desk during private meetings or while watching loud movies, knowing it will remain completely inert. To use the digital assistant, you must now intentionally and physically press and hold the Side Button, restoring complete manual control over your device’s microphone.
