The False Alarms
The Apple Watch utilizes its internal accelerometer and gyroscope to constantly monitor your physical movements. If the sensors detect a sudden, violent deceleration followed by a lack of movement, the “Fall Detection” algorithm triggers. It aggressively taps your wrist, sounds an alarm, and if you do not respond, it automatically dials emergency services. While this is a life-saving feature for the elderly, it is highly problematic for athletes. If you play high-impact sports like American football, or if you frequently crash while downhill mountain biking, you will constantly trigger false alarms and accidentally call 911. You must disable the detection algorithm during these activities.
How to Turn Off Fall Detection
You can permanently deactivate the accelerometer monitoring via the Emergency SOS settings.
- Open the Settings app directly on your Apple Watch (the grey gear icon).
- Scroll down the main list and tap on SOS.
- Tap on Fall Detection.
- Look for the master toggle switch labeled Fall Detection.
- Toggle this switch to the Off position (the green background will disappear).
Uninterrupted Athletics
The change takes effect immediately. The Apple Watch will completely stop analyzing your wrist movements for sudden impacts. You can now tackle, jump, and crash as much as you want without the watch ever sounding the alarm or attempting to dispatch paramedics to your location.
