How to Disable the “End Workout” Reminder on Apple Watch

The Premature Termination

The Apple Watch features an automated health tracking algorithm known as the “End Workout Reminder.” By default, if you are recording a workout and the watch detects a significant drop in your heart rate or accelerometer movement (e.g., stopping at a red light during a run, or resting between heavy lifting sets), the watch will suddenly vibrate and display a full-screen prompt asking if you are finished working out. For serious athletes who take long recovery pauses, this constant nagging is incredibly frustrating and can lead to accidentally terminating a workout prematurely. You must disable this algorithmic governor.

How to Turn Off the End Workout Reminder

You can permanently sever the background termination daemon via the Workout settings.

  1. Open the Settings app directly on your Apple Watch (the grey gear icon).
  2. Scroll down the main list and tap on Workout.
  3. Scroll down to the section governing automatic tracking.
  4. Locate the master toggle switch labeled End Workout Reminder.
  5. Toggle this switch to the Off position (the green background will disappear).

Strict Manual Control

The change is instantaneous. The Apple Watch will completely terminate the background machine learning daemon responsible for predicting when you have stopped exercising. The operating system will sever its connection to the deceleration triggers. You can now start a run and sit on a bench for twenty minutes, and the watch will absolutely refuse to interrupt you or ask if you are finished. The workout will continue recording in the background until you explicitly swipe the screen and press the red “End” button, guaranteeing absolute manual control over your athletic data.
