How to Disable the “Significant Locations” Tracking Feature on iPhone

The Silent GPS Diary

Deep within the iOS privacy settings lies a feature called “Significant Locations.” By default, your iPhone acts as a silent GPS diary, constantly recording the physical coordinates of everywhere you go, how long you stay there, and how often you visit. It uses this data to learn where you live, where you work, and which coffee shops you frequent, ostensibly to provide better predictive routing in Apple Maps. However, this means your phone contains a highly detailed, permanent log of your physical life. You must permanently destroy this geographic database.

How to Turn Off Significant Locations

You can permanently sever the tracking daemon and wipe the historical data via the System Services menu.

  1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
  2. Scroll down and tap on Privacy & Security.
  3. Tap on Location Services at the very top.
  4. Scroll all the way down to the absolute bottom of the app list and tap on System Services.
  5. Scroll down again and tap on Significant Locations. (You will be prompted for Face ID or your passcode).
  6. At the bottom of the screen, tap Clear History and confirm the deletion to wipe the existing database.
  7. Finally, toggle the master Significant Locations switch at the top of the screen to the Off position.

Absolute Geographic Privacy

The change takes effect instantly. The iPhone will completely terminate the background daemon responsible for logging your daily routines. Your phone will instantly forget your home address, your workplace, and your daily commute patterns. It will never again attempt to guess where you are driving or log how much time you spent at a specific location, guaranteeing that your daily physical movements remain entirely untracked and completely private.
