The Silent Buzz
Modern iPhones use a highly sophisticated “Taptic Engine” to generate vibrations. By default, the phone vibrates for phone calls, text messages, system alerts, and even tiny “haptic” clicks when you interact with certain UI elements. While you can dive into the Sounds settings to turn off vibration for specific alerts (like texts or emails), the phone will still occasionally buzz for emergency alerts, specific apps, or system errors. If you suffer from sensory overload, or if you simply demand a device that is physically incapable of making a sound or a vibration under any circumstance, you must flip the master hardware kill switch.
How to Turn Off All Vibration Globally
You can permanently sever the connection to the internal Taptic Engine via the Accessibility settings.
- Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
- Scroll down and tap on Accessibility.
- Under the “Physical and Motor” section, tap on Touch.
- Scroll down the page until you locate the master toggle switch labeled Vibration.
- Toggle this switch to the Off position (the green background will disappear).
A Truly Silent Device
The change takes effect instantly. This toggle is an absolute system override. The iPhone will completely cut power to the internal vibration motor. It will never buzz for a phone call, it will never vibrate during an emergency alert (like an AMBER alert or earthquake warning), and all interface haptics will instantly cease to exist. The phone is now permanently and completely physically silent.
