Whether you are about to share your screen during a Zoom presentation, want to take a pristine screenshot, or simply want to admire your beautiful new wallpaper without distractions, Windows 11 allows you to instantly vanish all your desktop icons with just a few clicks.
How to Hide Your Desktop Icons
You do not need to delete any files or move them into a folder to achieve a clean desktop. Windows has a built-in toggle switch that simply makes them invisible.
- Close or minimize any open application windows so you are looking directly at your desktop.
- Find an empty area of your wallpaper (be sure not to click on an actual icon).
- Right-click the empty space to open the context menu.
- Hover your mouse cursor over the View option at the very top of the list.
- A secondary menu will slide out to the right. Look at the very bottom of this new list for an option labeled Show desktop icons.
- You will likely see a checkmark next to “Show desktop icons.” Click on it.
- Instantly, every single icon, folder, and shortcut on your desktop will disappear, leaving you with nothing but your wallpaper.
How to Bring Your Icons Back
Rest assured, none of your files were deleted or moved. They are still sitting safely on your desktop; they are just invisible. Bringing them back is exactly the same process.
- Right-click anywhere on your empty desktop.
- Hover over View.
- Click on Show desktop icons again to add the checkmark back.
- All of your files and shortcuts will instantly reappear in their exact original positions.
