How to Update Windows 11 to the Latest Version

Keeping your computer up to date is the single most important thing you can do to protect your data from hackers, malware, and system crashes. Microsoft regularly releases updates for Windows 11 that patch dangerous security vulnerabilities, fix frustrating software bugs, and occasionally introduce entirely new features and design improvements. While Windows 11 is designed to handle this automatically in the background, you can manually check for and install the latest updates at any time.

How to Check for Updates Manually

Checking for updates ensures you aren’t waiting days or weeks for the automatic scheduler to catch up.

1. Click the Start button on your taskbar and open the Settings app (the gear icon).
2. In the left-hand sidebar menu, scroll all the way down to the bottom and click on Windows Update.
3. At the top right of the screen, you will see a large button labeled Check for updates. Click it.
4. Windows will now connect to Microsoft’s servers and search for any available patches. This process may take a few minutes depending on your internet connection.

How to Download and Install Updates

If Windows finds any new updates, they will appear in a list below the “Check for updates” button.

1. Windows will usually begin downloading mandatory security updates automatically as soon as it finds them. You will see a progress bar next to each item (e.g., “Downloading 45%”).
2. Once the download is complete, the status will change to “Installing.”
3. Some updates (especially large feature updates, like moving from Windows 11 22H2 to 23H2) are optional. They will appear in a separate section labeled “Optional updates available.” You must click the Download & install button next to them to begin the process.

Restarting Your Computer

Almost all significant Windows updates require a full system reboot to finish modifying core operating system files.

1. Once the installation process reaches 100%, Windows will prompt you that a restart is required.
2. A Restart now button will appear at the top of the Windows Update screen.
3. Before clicking it, ensure you have saved all your open documents and closed your applications.
4. Click Restart now.
5. Your screen will turn blue, and you will see a message like “Working on updates. Don’t turn off your PC.” Do not force shut down your computer during this process, as it can severely damage the operating system.
6. The computer may restart several times on its own before finally loading your lock screen. Once you log in, you are running the newest version of Windows 11.
