When you open the Camera app on a brand new iPhone, you might notice two faint white horizontal lines and two vertical lines intersecting across your screen, dividing your viewfinder into nine equal squares. This is the “Grid” feature. While professional photographers rely heavily on this grid to perfectly frame shots using the mathematical “Rule of Thirds,” casual users often find these lines distracting. If you simply want a clean, unobstructed view of what you are shooting, you can easily turn the grid off.
Understanding Why the Grid Exists
Before turning it off, it is helpful to know why Apple includes it. The Rule of Thirds suggests that placing the subject of your photo along one of the grid lines, or exactly at one of the four points where the lines intersect, creates an image that is naturally more pleasing to the human eye. Additionally, the grid helps you align horizons perfectly straight when taking landscape photos. However, if you are just quickly snapping a picture of a receipt or taking a quick selfie, it is completely unnecessary.
How to Disable the Grid
Like many built-in Apple applications, you cannot change this setting from inside the Camera app itself. You must navigate to the main iOS Settings menu.
- Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
- Scroll down the main list until you find Camera. (It is usually grouped with Photos, Music, and TV).
- Tap on Camera.
- Look for the section labelled “Composition.”
- Find the option labelled Grid.
- Tap the toggle switch so it turns from green (on) to grey (off).
What Happens to the Level?
On iOS 17 and newer, Apple introduced a dedicated “Level” feature alongside the Grid. The Level is a small, dynamic line in the center of the screen that turns yellow when you are holding the phone perfectly straight.
When you disable the Grid, the Level feature will not be disabled automatically. It has its own dedicated toggle switch located directly beneath the Grid toggle in the Camera settings menu. If you want a truly 100% clean viewfinder with zero interface elements hovering over your image, you must toggle both the Grid and the Level switches to the off position.
