Google Keep is arguably one of the fastest and most efficient note-taking apps available, perfect for jotting down quick ideas, grocery lists, or meeting bullet points on your phone. However, it severely lacks the formatting tools required for professional documentation. When a quick idea in Google Keep evolves into a multi-page project proposal or an essay, you cannot easily format it with H2 headers, tables, or complex bullet structures within Keep itself. Fortunately, Google has built a seamless integration that allows you to instantly export any Google Keep note directly into a fully formatted Google Doc with a single click.
Exporting from the Google Keep Mobile App
If you drafted a long note on your commute using the Google Keep app on your iPhone or Android device, you can convert it to a Doc without waiting until you are back at your computer.
- Open the Google Keep app on your mobile device.
- Tap on the specific note you want to convert.
- Tap the three vertical dots (More options) icon in the bottom right corner of the screen.
- Tap Send.
- A new menu will slide up from the bottom. Tap Copy to Google Docs.
A loading spinner will appear briefly. Once finished, a small toast notification will appear at the bottom of the screen saying “Copied to Google Docs.” You can tap the Open button on that notification to immediately launch the Google Docs app and view your newly created document.
Exporting from the Google Keep Web Browser
The process is just as simple if you are using Google Keep on your desktop computer.
- Go to keep.google.com in your web browser.
- Hover your mouse cursor over the note you wish to export. (You do not need to click into the note).
- Click the three vertical dots (More) icon that appears at the bottom of the note card.
- Click Copy to Google Docs from the dropdown menu.
A small pop-up box will appear in the bottom-left corner of your browser window while it processes. Once completed, click the Open Doc button. The new document will open in a new tab, ready for advanced formatting.
What Happens During the Export?
Understanding how Google handles the data conversion will save you time formatting the resulting document:
- Images: Any photos or drawings attached to the top of your Google Keep note will be imported perfectly and placed at the very top of the new Google Doc.
- Titles: If your Keep note had a title, it will automatically become both the file name of the Google Doc and the H1 Heading text at the top of the page.
- Checklists: If you used Keep’s checkbox feature, the checkboxes will be converted into a standard bulleted list in Google Docs. (Google Docs does support interactive checklists now, but the Keep export tool currently defaults to standard bullets).
- Original Data: The original note inside Google Keep is not deleted. Copying to Google Docs merely creates a duplicate; your original data remains perfectly safe inside Keep.
