How to Share Your Location on an iPhone

Whether you are trying to meet up with friends at a crowded music festival or you simply want your family to know you made it home safely after a late shift, sharing your location is one of the iPhone’s most useful features.

Apple provides several different ways to broadcast your GPS coordinates. You can send a quick, one-time ping of where you are right now, or you can allow someone to track your movements continuously. Here is how to share your location on an iPhone.

Method 1: Share Continuously via iMessage (Best for Family)

If you want a spouse or a parent to always know where you are, the Messages app is the easiest way to set up permanent tracking.

1. Open the Messages app.
2. Tap on an existing conversation with the person you want to share your location with.
3. Tap on their name or profile picture at the top center of the screen.
4. Look for the section labeled “Location” and tap Share My Location.
5. A pop-up menu will ask how long you want to broadcast your GPS signal. You can choose Share for One Hour, Share Until End of Day, or Share Indefinitely.

Once you make a selection, a small map widget will appear in the chat. The other person can now tap that map to see your exact location. If you chose “Indefinitely,” you can stop sharing at any time by returning to this menu and tapping Stop Sharing My Location.

Method 2: Send a One-Time “Pin” via Maps (Best for Meetups)

If you are waiting at a specific coffee shop and want to tell a friend exactly where you are sitting, you do not need to let them track you all day. You can just send a static map pin.

1. Open the Apple Maps app.
2. Wait a moment for the blue dot (your current location) to calibrate and settle.
3. Tap the blue dot.
4. A menu will pop up from the bottom of the screen. Tap Share My Location.
5. Choose how you want to send the link (you can select Messages, Mail, WhatsApp, etc.).

This sends a simple, static URL. When your friend clicks it, it will open their map app and show them exactly where you were standing when you pressed the button, but it will not follow you if you walk away.

Method 3: Share Your Live ETA While Driving

If you are currently driving somewhere and using Apple Maps for navigation, you can let people watch your car move in real-time so they know exactly when you will arrive.

1. Start a navigation route in Apple Maps.
2. Tap the bottom of the screen where your estimated arrival time (ETA) is displayed to expand the menu.
3. Tap Share ETA.
4. Select a contact from the list.

They will receive a notification that you are on your way. The tracking will automatically and instantly stop the moment your car pulls up to the final destination.
