The Invisible Security Guard
One of the greatest benefits of the Apple ecosystem is iCloud Keychain. When you create a new account for a website or an app on your iPhone, Apple automatically generates a highly complex, uncrackable password for you. It then stores this password invisibly in the background. The next time you visit that app, Face ID simply scans your face, and you are instantly logged in.
Because the system works so seamlessly, millions of iPhone users have absolutely no idea what their actual passwords are. If you ever need to log into your Netflix account on a friend’s smart TV, or sign into your bank on a work computer, you suddenly realise you are completely locked out because you cannot remember the password Apple generated for you.
Fortunately, every single password you have ever saved is locked inside a highly secure vault built directly into the iOS Settings app. You just need to know where to find it.
How to View Saved Passwords in iOS Settings
Because this vault contains the keys to your entire digital life, Apple requires strict biometric authentication to open it.
- Open the Settings app on your iPhone (the grey gear icon).
- Scroll down the main settings menu. (You will need to scroll past the General and Display settings).
- Look for a section with a grey key icon labeled Passwords. Tap it.
- Your iPhone will immediately lock the screen and demand authentication. You must look at the phone to scan your face with Face ID (or use Touch ID, or enter your lock screen PIN).
- Once authenticated, the vault will open. You will see a massive, alphabetical list of every website and app you have ever saved a password for.
- Scroll through the list, or use the Search bar at the very top, to find the specific website you need.
- Tap the name of the website.
You will now see a summary screen displaying the website URL, your username, and a line of black dots hiding your password. To reveal the actual password, simply tap on the black dots. The text will instantly become visible, allowing you to read it.
The Quick Copy Shortcut
If you need to paste the password into another app, you do not need to memorise it. When you tap the black dots to reveal the password, a small Copy Password option will appear directly above it. Tapping this will securely copy the text to your clipboard, allowing you to paste it anywhere.
How to View Passwords Using Siri
If you are in a rush and do not want to scroll through endless menus, you can simply ask Siri to find the password for you.
- Activate Siri (either by saying “Hey Siri” or by pressing and holding the side button on your iPhone).
- Say clearly: “Show me my password for Netflix” (replace Netflix with whatever website you need).
- Siri will instantly jump past the main settings menu and drop you directly in front of the Face ID authentication screen for that specific password.
This is by far the fastest way to retrieve a lost login credential.
What If the Password Is Missing?
If you search the vault and cannot find the password you are looking for, it means one of two things:
- You chose “Never Save”: When you originally created the account, a prompt appeared asking if you wanted to save the password. If you accidentally tapped “Not Now” or “Never for this website,” Apple never recorded it. You will have to use the “Forgot Password” link on the website to reset it.
- You use a third-party password manager: If you use Google Chrome, the password might be saved in your Google Account instead of your Apple iCloud Keychain. You would need to check the password settings inside the Google Chrome app to find it.
