How to Factory Reset an Amazon Fire TV Stick

Fixing Stubborn Glitches and Wiping Your Data

The Amazon Fire TV Stick is a brilliant, inexpensive way to turn any standard monitor or older television into a modern smart TV. However, because they are essentially tiny computers running a modified version of the Android operating system, they can occasionally run into problems. Over time, as you install dozens of streaming apps, internal storage can fill up, apps can begin to crash, and the entire interface can become incredibly sluggish.

If you have already tried restarting the device and uninstalling unused apps but the Fire TV Stick is still freezing, a factory reset is the ultimate troubleshooting step. Additionally, if you are planning to sell the device, give it to a friend, or return it to the store, you absolutely must perform a factory reset first. This process completely wipes the internal storage, deleting your Amazon account credentials, your downloaded apps, and all your saved Wi-Fi passwords, returning the device to the exact state it was in when you took it out of the box.

Method 1: Resetting from the Settings Menu

If your Fire TV Stick is still responding to your remote control and you can successfully navigate through the menus on your television screen, this is the easiest way to wipe the device.

  1. Turn on your television and ensure the Fire TV Stick is awake and displaying the main home screen.
  2. Using the directional ring on your remote, scroll all the way to the right side of the main menu bar until you highlight the gear icon (Settings).
  3. Press the Down button on the directional ring to enter the Settings menu, then scroll to the right and select My Fire TV.
  4. Scroll down to the very bottom of this list and select Reset to Factory Defaults.
  5. A warning message will appear on the screen, informing you that you are about to delete all your personal data and downloaded applications. Select Reset to confirm.

The screen will turn black, and the Amazon logo will appear. The reset process usually takes about five minutes. Do not unplug the Fire TV Stick from the wall outlet or the TV during this process, as cutting the power while the storage is formatting can permanently damage the device. Once it finishes, the initial setup screen asking you to pair your remote will appear.

Method 2: Resetting Using the Remote Shortcut (When the Screen is Frozen)

If your Fire TV Stick is severely glitched—for example, if the screen is completely frozen on a specific app, or if the menus are lagging so badly that you cannot navigate to the Settings icon—you can force a factory reset using a hidden button combination on the remote control.

  1. Ensure the Fire TV Stick is plugged in and the television is turned on.
  2. Hold the remote control and locate the Right directional button (the right side of the large navigation ring) and the Back button (the button with the curved arrow pointing left).
  3. Press and hold both of these buttons down simultaneously.
  4. Continue holding both buttons for exactly 10 seconds.
  5. A pop-up message will suddenly appear on your television screen stating that a factory reset is about to occur.

You now have two choices: You can use the remote to select “OK” to begin the reset immediately, or you can simply do nothing. If you do not touch the remote, a countdown timer on the screen will expire after 20 seconds, and the Fire TV Stick will automatically proceed with the factory reset.

Note: If this button combination does not work, it usually means your remote has un-paired from the Fire TV Stick or the remote’s batteries are dead. Try replacing the batteries first. If the remote is completely broken, you cannot use this method; you will need to buy a replacement remote or use a television remote that supports HDMI-CEC to navigate the menus using Method 1.
