Netflix is a truly global platform, boasting a massive catalogue of international films, documentaries, and television series produced all over the world. Whether you want to watch a French thriller, a Korean drama, or a Spanish comedy, Netflix makes it incredibly easy to cross borders from the comfort of your living room.

To support this international library, Netflix offers two distinct language settings: your Display Language (the text used for menus, buttons, and movie descriptions) and your Audio & Subtitles Language (what you actually hear and read while watching a show). If you share your account with family members who speak different languages, or if you are trying to learn a new language by immersing yourself in foreign media, knowing how to adjust these settings is essential.

Because Netflix allows you to create individual profiles for different users, changing the language on your profile will not affect anyone else sharing your account.

How to Change the Audio and Subtitle Language

If you want to change the spoken dialogue or the subtitles for the specific movie or TV show you are currently watching, you do not need to dive into the main settings menu. You can do this directly from the video player.

1. Open Netflix and start playing your chosen movie or TV show.
2. Once the video is playing, tap the screen (on a smartphone or tablet), move your mouse (on a computer), or press the Up arrow on your remote (on a smart TV) to reveal the playback controls.
3. Look for the Audio & Subtitles icon. On a computer or TV, it looks like a small speech bubble. On a mobile device, it is usually located at the bottom of the screen and clearly labelled “Audio & Subtitles.”
4. Click or tap this icon to open the language menu.
5. You will see two columns. In the left column, select your preferred Audio language (e.g., changing from the original Korean audio to an English dub).
6. In the right column, select your preferred Subtitles (e.g., turning on English subtitles while listening to the Korean audio).
7. The video will briefly pause and then resume playing with your new language selections.

Note: Not every show is available in every language. The options you see in this menu depend entirely on what audio tracks and subtitles Netflix has licensed for that specific piece of content.

How to Change the Display Language (Menus and Text)

If you want to change the language of the entire Netflix interface—including the navigation menus, the buttons, and the descriptions of the movies—you need to change your Profile settings. This is easiest to do on a computer web browser, but you can also do it via the mobile app.

Using a Web Browser (Mac or PC):

1. Go to Netflix.com and log into your account.
2. On the “Who’s watching?” screen, click on Manage Profiles. (If you are already logged in, hover over your profile picture in the top-right corner and select Manage Profiles).
3. Click the Pencil icon located in the centre of your specific profile picture.
4. Look for the Language drop-down menu.
5. Click the menu and select your preferred display language from the list.
6. Click the Save button at the bottom of the screen.
7. Click Done. The entire interface will now reload in your chosen language.

Using the Mobile App (iOS or Android):

1. Open the Netflix app on your phone or tablet.
2. Tap on My Netflix in the bottom-right corner of the screen.
3. Tap the three horizontal lines (the hamburger menu) in the top-right corner.
4. Select Manage Profiles.
5. Tap on your specific profile.
6. Tap on Display Language.
7. Select your new language from the list and confirm your choice.

Remember, these changes are tied to your specific profile. If you change your display language to Spanish, your partner’s profile will remain in English, allowing everyone in the household to enjoy Netflix in the language they are most comfortable with.
