How to Clear the App Cache on a Samsung Smart TV

If your Samsung Smart TV is taking an unusually long time to turn on, if navigating the home menu feels sluggish, or if streaming apps like Netflix and Prime Video are constantly freezing and buffering, the first troubleshooting step is always to clear the cache.

Just like a smartphone, your Samsung TV constantly downloads temporary data (interface images, video thumbnails, and background scripts) to help apps load faster. Over time, this hidden cache fills up the TV’s limited internal storage, causing severe performance issues.

Samsung’s proprietary Tizen operating system does not make clearing the cache obvious, and the exact method varies depending on the year your TV was manufactured. Here is how to clear the cache for individual apps, as well as how to perform a full system memory wipe.

How to Clear Individual App Caches (2020 Models and Newer)

If you own a relatively modern Samsung TV, you can use the built-in Device Care menu to clear the cache for specific apps that are misbehaving.

  1. Turn on your TV and press the Home button on your remote.
  2. Navigate left and select the Settings icon (the gear shape).
  3. Scroll down to the Support tab (the cloud icon with a question mark).
  4. Select Device Care. (If this option is greyed out, close all open apps and try again).
  5. Select Manage Storage at the bottom of the screen.
  6. You will see a list of all your installed apps. Highlight the app that is causing problems (e.g., Netflix) and press the down arrow to select View Details.
  7. Select Clear Cache.

Warning: Be careful not to select “Clear Data” unless you are prepared to log back into the app, as clearing data will delete your saved passwords and account settings.

How to Clear the System Cache (The Cold Boot Method)

If your entire TV feels slow, or if your TV model does not have the “Device Care” menu (common on older models), you should perform a “Cold Boot”. A Cold Boot is different from simply pressing the power button. It physically drains the television of all remaining electrical charge, forcing the system RAM and temporary cache to wipe completely clean.

There are two ways to perform a Cold Boot.

Method 1: Using the Remote (Recommended)

  1. Ensure the TV is currently turned on.
  2. Press and hold down the Power button on your Samsung remote.
  3. Keep holding the button. The screen will turn off, but do not let go.
  4. Continue holding the Power button until the TV turns itself back on and displays the Samsung startup logo.
  5. You can now release the button. The cache is cleared.

Method 2: The Unplug Method

  1. While the TV is turned on, unplug the power cable directly from the wall outlet.
  2. Wait for at least 60 seconds. (This wait time is crucial; it allows the internal capacitors to discharge completely).
  3. Plug the TV back into the wall and turn it on. The memory is now flushed.

Performing a Cold Boot will not delete your apps, change your picture settings, or remove your Wi-Fi passwords. It is a completely safe maintenance step that you should perform every few months to keep your TV running smoothly.
