How to Disable Location Tracking in the iPhone Camera App

The Silent Metadata Tracker

By default, the iPhone Camera app is granted full access to the device’s GPS hardware. Every single time you take a photograph, the exact longitude and latitude coordinates of where you are standing are permanently embedded into the image file’s hidden EXIF metadata. While this is great for organizing vacation photos on a map, it is a massive privacy risk if you frequently post photos online or text pictures to strangers. Anyone who downloads the image can instantly extract your exact home address. To guarantee your photos are clean, you must permanently strip the Camera app’s GPS privileges.

How to Turn Off Location Services for the Camera

You can permanently sever the connection between the camera lens and the GPS chip via the Privacy settings.

  1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
  2. Scroll down and tap on Privacy & Security.
  3. At the very top of the menu, tap on Location Services.
  4. Scroll down the alphabetical list of applications until you find Camera.
  5. Tap on Camera to open its specific permissions.
  6. Under the “Allow Location Access” heading, change the selection to Never.

Clean Photography

The change takes effect instantly. The iPhone will completely block the Camera application from polling the GPS hardware. From this moment forward, every photograph and video you capture will be completely devoid of location metadata. You can safely text images or upload them to social media with absolute confidence that they contain zero embedded tracking information regarding your physical location.
