How to Disable File Explorer Ads in Windows 11

The Intrusive Marketing

Windows 11 is designed to push Microsoft’s cloud services aggressively. By default, the operating system enables a feature called “Sync Provider Notifications.” In reality, this is simply a backdoor that allows Microsoft to inject direct advertisements into your native File Explorer. As you browse your hard drive, you will frequently see large banners appear directly beneath the address bar begging you to “Upgrade your OneDrive storage” or “Try Office 365.” If you use your computer for professional work and refuse to have your local file manager hijacked by subscription advertisements, you must completely disable the notification hook.

How to Turn Off File Explorer Ads

You can permanently strip the marketing banners from your local interface via the File Explorer options.

  1. Open any standard folder on your computer to launch File Explorer.
  2. Click the three horizontal dots (…) located on the top menu bar (next to the View button).
  3. Click on Options at the bottom of the drop-down menu.
  4. In the Folder Options window that appears, click the View tab at the top.
  5. Scroll down the “Advanced settings” list until you find the checkbox labeled “Show sync provider notifications.”
  6. Click the checkbox to completely remove the checkmark.
  7. Click Apply, then click OK.

A Clean File Manager

The change takes effect instantly. Windows 11 will completely terminate the connection between the local file manager and Microsoft’s cloud advertising servers. You can now browse your personal documents, photos, and system files without ever again seeing a banner begging you to purchase a monthly cloud storage subscription.
