The Charging Delay
To extend the overall lifespan of the tiny lithium-ion battery inside the Apple Watch, Apple utilizes a feature called “Optimized Battery Charging.” Using machine learning, the watch learns your daily routine. If you charge your watch overnight, it will rapidly charge to 80% and then intentionally stop charging. It will hold the battery at 80% for hours, only trickling the final 20% in right before it predicts you will wake up. While this prevents battery degradation over years of ownership, it is incredibly frustrating if your schedule changes randomly and you pull the watch off the charger at 3:00 AM, only to find it artificially stuck at 80%. If you need maximum battery life right now, you must disable the optimization.
How to Turn Off Optimized Battery Charging
You can force the watch to ignore your daily routine and charge at maximum speed via the battery settings.
- Open the Settings app directly on your Apple Watch (the grey gear icon).
- Scroll down the main list and tap on Battery.
- Tap on Battery Health.
- Scroll down to the bottom of the screen.
- Look for the master toggle switch labeled Optimized Battery Charging.
- Toggle this switch to the Off position.
- A confirmation prompt will appear. Tap Turn Off.
The 100% Guarantee
The change takes effect immediately. The next time you place the Apple Watch on its magnetic puck, it will aggressively charge all the way to 100% as fast as the hardware allows, regardless of the time of day or your historical sleeping habits, ensuring you always leave the house with a completely full battery.
